Thread: Need some help

  1. #11
So I decided to bypass systematic problem solving and just throw more money at the situation on the assumption that Ros was right and it was the USB adapter that was the problem.

Since I had never had a problem receiving a signal before, and the new router I bought is supposed to be an upgrade in every way, I thought it might be a problem with the adapter not being strong enough to send a signal back.

Ended up giving up on USB adapter and tried a PCI adapter, and then bought a heavy duty antenna for some extra insurance. Could be jumping the gun a little, but it seems like this was correct and everything has been working great so far! Better, actually. I've been going off of a wireless connection for at least 6 years now, and I'm used to 54Mbps max if lucky and at full signal strength. Now I'm getting a very steady 270Mbs (sometimes maxes at 300Mbs) and the difference is substantial. No signal drop or even a slowdown or loading problem in over 2 days so far. Crossing my fingers. Thanks for the input, everyone.

Glad it's working! I usually prefer non-money solutions to money solutions, but hey, a solution is a solution is a solution. And networking solutions mean more Thresh time, so double win!!

As a side point: Thank you Jyn for making the job easy! Details, details, details; the more information you provide, the better. If you're curious as to what you did right, there's a great guide to asking geeky questions on ESR's site: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

    Some key points:
    • Choose your forum carefully
Yep. "Internet and Technology" fits that.
    • Use meaningful, specific subject headers
Okay, not so much here. But the very first line of the post said the important stuff, and subject headers aren't quite as crucial on low traffic threaded forums as they are on high traffic email discussion lists.
    • Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language
Most Threshers are good at this anyway.
    • Be precise and informative about your problem
The very first post had lots of detail about what exactly had gone wrong, and subsequent posts added to it. Also, stating what's changed ("I recently upgraded my router") gives us obvious starting points for research.
    • Courtesy never hurts, and sometimes helps
      Check.
    • Follow up with a brief note on the solution
That's this latest post. It's no end of satisfying to learn that the problem has been solved. Geeks live to solve problems. Reward us by showing that the problem's gone, and we'll feel good about the whole affair, no matter how many hours of work it took.

Thanks Jyn for letting us all take part in your victory!
