Thread: Need some help

    Need some help

I recently upgraded my router to a Belkin Wireless N and also bought a matching Belkin Wireless N access point.

Since switching, my computer seems to be having trouble loading certain kinds of information while browsing the internet. Mostly, it seems to be anything graphical/flash related... I could be wrong on that. I don't know about this stuff. An example would be Facebook pictures. They take forever to load and sometimes don't, even after refreshing the page a bunch of times. I have to right click the spot where the pic should be and do it that way.

Youtube videos don't always load properly, either. They'll sometimes only partially load and then stop for no good reason.

I guess it seems like my internet just hangs sometimes. Does anyone know what this could be? The browser I'm using is Firefox. I tried using Chrome, but the problems are even more frequent with that.

This kind of unpredictability really hurts my Thresh time (already chalked up 2 deaths). Thanks!

I had all kinds of problems with mine. Turned out it was a Vista problem with the wireless card driver. Not much I could do except keep the driver up to date. Everynow and then a Vista update requires me to screw with the device settings which is a real pain until the driver is updated.

Upshot of it was though that I never had a reliable connection again. My partner runs a notebook (with XP) off of the same router and has almost none of the connection problems I have. So if your Thresh borging is important to you, buy a cable for the important stuff.

A friend of mine had the same problem and it appears to be something to do with a slow down in connection speeds which appear to be related to the Belkin.

I posted a link to a forum where they discuss this problem. It is all a bit Techy for me but you might be able to get some help there.

    Good luck

Thanks for the replies and the link. I was originally leaning towards (and hoping) the adapter was at fault. If it's the router, I'm not going to be happy. Both pieces cost $60 each... the crap Netgear router and Linksys adapter I had been using prior to this never gave me any such problems and were probably half that. I guess I'll hook the Netgear back up and see if it continues. I probably should have tried it to begin with, and I'll kick myself if that's all it takes.

Problem is all of the different factors it could be:

    2.4 band interference
    new adapter
    new router
drivers with either of the 2 above devices
Windows 7 64bit upgrade (my comp with the adapter, not the wired/router one)

I had initially ruled out the interference because I had never had any such problems with my old set up (yes I have a wireless phone system set up throughout the house). If it is a problem typical of Belkin like some of those posts say, I'll need to switch brands.

Hi np good luck. I use Linksys and never had a problem except when I bought a new laptop - turned out it was a crap wifi on the PB EasyNote that made everything slow.

YouTube does that for me regularly while every other facet of connectivity runs along fine. I always assumed it was YouTube's bandwidth problems.

I'd probably suspect the same, except I had never had that problem before the switch. It's still a possibility, but taking it with the other problems that surfaced at the same time, I'm not so sure.

I'll update after I find some time to try the old router again.

Youtube handles glitches very badly. Seems your new router provides a glitchy connection.

Okay so I've bought and tried 2 different wireless routers now and 2 different wireless USB adapters... I'm still having a slow down problem.

With the adapter I'm currently using, I seem to get a max 135Kbps. It will randomly drop from that max to 13.5Kbps though and go super slow, sometimes disconnecting. This will happen even though the link quality and signal strength remain in the 90% range.

I have no idea what could be causing this at this point. Turns out my wireless phones are 5.8Ghz band, there are no microwaves remotely near anything (or running when slow down occurs, regardless), and no other wireless network in range is on the same channel I am.

If left idle, there doesn't seem to be any change in speed (usually). The slow downs, at least to the degree I'm having problems with, seem to only occur when trying to load webpages. Are firewalls choking me out here? Firefox/Chrome not working with Windows 7 64bit? I can't imagine it would be the hardware. All drivers and firmware are up to date and listed as compatible. This is getting frustrating.

I'm strongly inclined to suspect the USB Wifi adapter. If you possibly can, switch to blue cable and see what you get... then if it works, switch back and see what happens. Same router, same backing connection, and above all, same software - just see if you get any difference. Change one thing at a time, see what diff it makes, carry on from there.
