Yeah right. When 30,000+ employee corporations get patents on stuff related to unavoidable advertisements, its rarely for the benefit of the user....

Yeah in the past they did make mistakes, but since Steve Jobs returned as CEO in 1997 Apple has gone nowhere but up. Especially since the iPod release in 2001.

With Steve Jobs being on the list of 5 signatures for the patent I'm going to take the stance that this isn't the evil masterplan for Apple to rule the world via forced advertising.

With everything released on this incident so far there is very little fact on any of the articles besides they applied for a patent for advertising in which the customer has to acknowledge the ad. That's it. Any other paragraph written is the interpretation of the writer on what "may" happen if this patent does gets approved.

Personally before I start boycotting Apple products I'm going to wait and see their announcement for what they plan to do with the patent, rather than the wild interpretations of a few writers.

Ever seen a Microsoft machine strangled because the registry has been overtaken with spyware? Those annoying pop-ups in internet explorer that come up every 5 minutes?

So basically this is OS-endorsed, non-removable spyware.

After a lifetime of obsession with DRMs, closed architectures, and other anti-consumer stances, why would Steve Jobs suddenly start caring about the consumer?

Steve Jobs cares about Steve Jobs. He doesn't give a crap about the consumer, and his life history of product design kinda shows that. I don't necessarily blame him. It is just idealistic and factually incorrect to think Jobs is any less of a vicious capitalist than say, Bill Gates. He's just not as good at it as Gates.

To most people, prior usage is a conclusive argument. And "most people" includes the courts that have jurisdiction over trademarks. Clearly Apple does not have the common sense God gave to a peanut.

Looking at it the other way: What is the use to Apple of winning this? Surely they won't make as much money as they're spending to crush this company. What's in it for them?
