    Skirt Extention Project - SA

    I read this and laughed....

    Skirt extension project mystifies
    08/04/2009 10:49 - (SA)

    Susan Cilliers, Beeld

Johannesburg - A mysterious campaign which states that the current skirt length of the majority of ladies restroom signs is too short, is attracting widespread interest, with people wondering who is behind it.

A half page advertisement for the so-called National Skirt Extension Project (NSEP) appeared in the Sunday Times over the weekend.

On its website, NSEP , the NSEP says that after extensive consultation, it has reached the conclusion that skirt lengths on the images on toilet doors are too short.

The website does not say who conducted the consultation process or who was interviewed, but does go on to say that, from now on, a new image with a longer dress should appear on toilet entrances.

Tiny Koaho of the Sunday Times's advertising division told Beeld on Tuesday that the client is paying almost R200 000 for one advertisement, and wants the campaign to run over a period of three weeks in that paper.

"We also wanted to write an editorial piece about this, but the client requested that his identity be kept confidential until the campaign is over.

"He first wants to test the reaction before he is willing to talk to the newspapers."

    No joke

According to Koaho, the ad isn't a joke. "These people are serious, they are paying a lot of money for this campaign."

The Pretoria company which runs the website on behalf of those in charge of the campaign, is also not allowed to identify their client.

The website even suggests a sticker with the new skirt length to be added to the images with short shirts, where new, longer skirted images have not yet replaced old ones.

According to the website, all owners of public restrooms will in future be forced to install images with longer skirts.

The distance from the base of the figure's foot to the hem of the dress must be no more than a tenth of the total length of the figure.

Apparently if it is more than a tenth, the dress is too short and should be replaced by an image with a longer dress, states the website.

Despite several attempts and long waiting periods, Beeld was not able to speak to an agent on the toll-free number supplied on the website.

Fascinating. I suppose next someone has to complain about all those signs that use a steam locomotive to mean "train" (see http://tinyurl.com/cphjfh for example), even though you almost never see them on the tracks, and if you did, they wouldn't be 4-4-0s. Lissen folks! Some things are iconic for a reason! You see that sign, you know it means "trains"... you see the classic "women" icon, you know what it means. It doesn't matter if all the women in the area will be wearing trousers, the icon is still the same. Oh! I know what would be next. A complaint that every single person (men and women both, now) is depicted as being black! Yes! It's RACIST!!!
