Universal Charging Solution for Mobile Phones

    About freakin' time.

Mobile Industry Unites to Drive Universal Charging Solution for Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 leading mobile operators and manufacturers today announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption, the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers1 and the enhancement of the customer experience by simplifying the charging of mobile phones.

The group has set an ambitious target that by 2012 a universal charging solution (UCS) will be widely available in the market worldwide and will use Micro-USB as the common universal charging interface.

    ...

The initial group of companies who have joined the GSMA's UCS initiative include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone – some of the world's largest mobile operators and manufacturers who together are committed to making a universal charging solution a reality up to 2012 and beyond.
They are going with micro USB, which also means you can charge your phone off your laptop.

Apple was the most conspicuous mobile phone vendor who is NOT getting on board. I know Apple loves their proprietary hardware, but taking it to this extent is just asinine.

I would hardly consider apple a major player in the phone market. Sure, the Iphone's been popular, but in about 6 months somebody's going to release something better and shinier (if they haven't already), and everyone's going to realize how shit the iphone actually is.

Except of course for mac fanbois.

Micro USB also lets me charge my phone off my 360. Handy!
All shrank, like boys who unaware,
Ranging the woods to start a hare,
Come to the mouth of the dark lair
Where, growling low, a fierce old bear
    Lies amidst bones and blood.

    About time.

My only (extremely minor) regret is that they're going with Micro USB, when they could have gone with Mini USB; more people are likely to have the latter than the former. But if this becomes common, then micro USB cables will become correspondingly common, eliminating the problem.

It's high time a bit of universality came to phones. The Open Handset Alliance, and now this. Good news.
