Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of having a free-for-all with no rules when it comes to firearms, but I'm also not in favor of firearms being used as a bogeyman to take them away from generally peaceful citizens.

I'm also very strongly in favor of a person having to take a safety and law class in order to get their handgun carry permit. Some U.S. states require this and some do not.
I agree with most of this, as someone who has a conceal carry permit I have to say that I agree with taking safety courses. I had to take several before my permit was granted and I still take one now and again.

The danger in my mind is those who lack the morale aptitude to apply their right in a righteous and or responsible manner.
