It's the moderates that take passages out of context and reinterpret, so that they can reconcile their faith with thoughtful morality. Justification of violence comes about when one doesn't reinterpret, and doesn't take things out of context, and instead reads the book literaly.

It's always amused me that the "extremist" label gets applied to the people that actually just follow what the holy books explicitly say.
