Apple Tells Mac Users: Start Using 3 Anti-Virus programs... at the same time

This is a pretty shocking announcement, since in the past Apple has used the virus issue as one of their selling points in their snarky, smug, "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials.

Apple to Mac users: No anti-virus software? Get it now!

Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple anti-virus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult.
And even more interesting.... Apple PULLED THE STORY off their own web site.

Apple pulls support note recommending antivirus software
Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my Uncle Jack off a horse." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse."

There is never a good time for lazy writing!

The Anti-Virus Story is NOT new

Basically mac has always recommended the use of anti-virus software. The rest of these stories are just blown out of proportion hype.
Sure, I got a secret. More 'n one. Don't seem likely I tell 'em to you now, do it? Anyone off Titan colony knows better than to talk to strangers. You're talkin' loud enough for the both of us, though, ain't ya? I've met a dozen like you. Skipped off-home early. Minor graft jobs here and there. Spent some time in the lockdown, but less than you claim. And you're, what, a petty thief with delusions standing? Sad little king of a sad little hill.

Its also a story that they retracted Aristotle mentioned: http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/08/12/03/195229.shtml

Which I find particularly interesting really. More so if they have been offering that advice for a while - but after that particular media backlash... Can't be too surprised. Still, that isn't likely to help them much.

Eh *shrugs*... it was old information. When it became a big hooplah, they took it down saying it was out of date information.

Honestly, I don't see the problem.

To me it just sounds like a bunch of people scouring over information desperately trying to find some fault and then screaming "GOTCHA! HA HA!" and cackling with victory.

Meanwhile, apple just shrugs it off fixes their mistake and moves on with their life.

If Apple had made a huge big deal about it and denied everything publically and spent millions of dollars trying to defend their product (Vista anyone) the response would be exactly the same.

Macs. Viruses. You know what I'm most tired of? The statements from Windows users to the effect that if Mac OS were more common, there'd be more viruses written for the platform (and ditto for Linux, OS/2, and anything else under the sun (I've never heard it said about Solaris)). There IS a huge difference between one OS and another, and some of them it's just not worth writing malware for. Here's why.

Any sensible Mac user has been using one of the free AV programs for Macs for a while... to avoid inadvertently passing on a virus to a windows user.

They took it down, saying it was out of date, then in the same release/interview, the Apple rep said the same thing "we have always recommended the use of anti-virus."

It is a big deal because:

    1) They actually have tv ads that invulnerability to virii is one of the ways Macs are superior to PCs.

    2) They took down the article once news broke about it (cover up).

    3) When trying to say "oh that's just old info", they also had to add statements affirming it. Why? Because they know they can't say you don't need anti virus with your Mac.

That's why it is a big deal. Their marketing lie got exposed, then their cover up got exposed, and then their excuse got exposed as fake since they had to turn right around and give the identical advice as what was in the removed note.

I can accept that. My perspective is that I am a mac user and it has been my experience that their original claim is quite true. I don't have virus protection, and never needed it. So I find the entire cover ups and "gotcha" language all kind of moot.

To me this is just the rather large group of people who hate those annoying mac preaching elitists and want to 'stick it to them'.
