You obviously didn't read my post thoroughly if you're attempting to qoute me in order to justify your rather insane agenda of using WMDs. But that's probably my fault for being so droll and less than concise.Gromgor: Once upon a time, about 60 or so years ago there was a variable to exit the loop. It was the most extreme thing ever done in human existence and stopped WWII in it's tracks.
When I was a kid, I loved the show Captain Planet. Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! ... Heart? wtf... I didn't understand this whole heart thing. Why did captain planet need heart when he had the power of the elements at his control.
Then as I grew up, I realized that heart was the most important element of all. What good is all that power without the heart to discern when and how to use it? To know what is adequate and what is extreme?
In my original post, I said we can't lose heart when we're dealing with these people, or we're no better than they are. Using weapons that have an enormous area of affect, and have classically been used to target civilian areas is lacking in heart.
I believe Ari.. or someone else.. mentioned that we (America) try to learn from our mistakes, and misdealings. As a result, we develop "precision weapons", why? Because it's immoral, and illegal to target largely civilian areas. Instead we drop pins and hope for the best. We are still outraged at the loss of civilian life we cause overseas, and goddamn right. But we -try- to learn from that, and further our technology to that end.
That more or less epitomizes what I was trying to say in many more words. It's this nuanced and understanding approach that changes conditioning which changes behavior: and that's the only way we'll see any end to it.Jolen: To reiterate: this conflict will not be solved by killing all of the terrorists. That just makes more terrorists. Destroying the foundation for the creation of more terrorists is key. That requires a nuanced and understanding approach which is not glamorous, does not "feel good" and requires time and patience. Unfortunately, the correct paths will many times be the most difficult.
Sure, we'll see an end if we just nuke everyone indiscriminately. Terrorists, civilians. Good people. Bad people. They won't be around to generate the marginal percent that turn into our enemies. But then you'll be my enemy. And the loop just continues.
Let's fight the wars we have to fight, and let's do it honorably.
