    Lebanese celebrate child murderer

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/...wap/index.html

"A member of the Palestine Liberation Front, Kuntar led a group of four men who entered Israel from Lebanon by boat in 1979. They killed a police officer who came across them. Then they took a 28-year-old man and his 4-year-old daughter hostage. Kuntar shot the father dead at close range in front of his daughter and tossed his body in the sea. He then smashed the girl's head, killing her."

    And,

"Upon their arrival in southern Lebanon, the five released militants changed into military garb and were greeted by the handshakes and embraces of dignitaries and officials before crowds of Hezbollah supporters."

    Unbelievable.

It is unbelievable that team X will cheer for its members who caused the horrible deaths of team Y, their hated enemies?

Or is it unbelievable that after killing a father, his daughter, and a police officer these killers are released, let alone still alive? This is Israel after all, not the U.S.

The problem (I'm not really sure it's a problem) is that we care too much of our own and we were willing to release a child murderer for the bodies of two soldiers who fell in the beginning of the war in Lebanon two years ago (and just so that everyone knows - we didn't have any solid facts until they were brought in coffins, that they are dead).

On the other hand, terrorist organizations, such as Hezbollah, will happily feast on the blood of young children, and if you asked them, they will tell you there's nothing wrong with it.

Those people are so unreasonable that it's practically impossible to have this conversation. You will never understand what goes in their creepy minds.

I wish more people understood this. There is pure evil in this world. Evil that cannot be bargained or pleaded with. Evil that cannot be assuaged by "understanding" or "being sensitive to their plight."

The sooner we understand this, the more able we will be to actually deal with it and potentially rid ourselves of it.

This evil feasts upon our indecision and our foolish belief that evil is just a misunderstanding or a different perspective.
Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my Uncle Jack off a horse." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse."

How does that quote go? That one that defines the difference between good and evil..or at least the paths to victory.

"The only thing that need happen for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"?

While I find the actions of these men and men like them reprehensible, it is exactly this kind of thinking which brings them justification. They think that the West is an evil which requires their full force at destroying, and nothing is wrong in the pursuit in those goals. This kind of justification is something which the West should avoid (Axis of Evil, etc.), yet unfortunately, it is one of the most successful tools at garnering support. Historically, it is how support was rallied against those we opposed (U.S.S.R., Nazi Germany, etc).

Painting someone as Evil creates several implications in the minds of the public, evoking sentiments that dehumanize that which you are declaring Evil to make it easier to self-justify opposing them. It is important to remember that it is their behavior that is wrong and that is what should be opposed.

I believe that there may be a path to change with this situation and declaring the people as Evil may blind this option or the possibility of this option in the future. There are a very select few people in the world who are incapable of redemption or change, due to biological reasons. Redemption should be at the top of our list when dealing with people who behave in this fashion.

    Very well said Jolen

That is the "sensitive" attitude that guarantees we will never win. These forces of evil will always triumph, and will never be defeated when we let them play that trick on us.

Of course those who are evil try to paint the other side as evil. But the difference is, they really ARE evil, and we aren't. We are so overwhelmed by our apologistic, nuanced, "nobody is different they are just misunderstood" way of thinking that we have totally lost our ability to understand that some things actually ARE absolute.

There are truly evil people in the world. The fact that they say "No, I'm not evil. You are!" doesn't make them less evil, and doesn't mean we should back down and simply try to understand why they do the horrible things they do and forgive it.

    Wow. What horribly cliched tripe.

That right there is a recipe for defeat.

You can't fight a "behavior," You can't stop a "behavior." You can only stop people. The longer we sit on our hands trying to change "behaviors" the more likely it is that these people, who care about results not our feelings, will destroy us.

I disagree with these two statements so fundamentally, I don't even know where to begin. I'm going to have to think about it somemore and get back to you.

    Thank you Ari.

I believe that completely. It is a sad fact of life that some people are so far gone that there really is just NO help for them. Everyone always harps on about winning over hearts and minds, and some people you can, some people get a bag of rice or some high protein peanut butter with the American flag on it and that changes everything. On the other hand there are those people out there that are so radical, so fundamentalist, and so adherent to their own view of life (which usually has no value to them btw, LIFE I mean) that they cannot be "rehabilitated" or "shown the error of their ways" or "given the keys to liberty". When you encounter people like the ones discussed here, and not just radical Islamofascists like Hamas or Hezbollah, the best thing you can do for the world is to either imprison them for life, which I see as a waste of tax dollars, or kill them. I am sorry, one bullet is a lot cheaper than 3 square meals a day for 60 years.
