    Woman jailed in Saudi Arabia

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,329605,00.html

Ah poetic justice, is there anything sweeter?
Stranger, observe our laws! We have both swords and shovels and we doubt that anyone would miss you.

Sometimes your schadenfreude is sickening Saveric. What did this woman do to deserve your wrath, and the indignity of being strip searched, jailed and condemned to hell?

Any theocracy is vile, and it is the theocracy that deserves your hatred, not the poor victims of its rule. I had read about this case earlier today on Daily Kos, and I must say that that author's anger was far more eloquent and pointed than yours.

I am having trouble finding the "hatred" and "wrath" in this post that you speak of, Malacasta.

Something doesn't have to be "nice" to still be poetic justice. Dale Earnhardt was killed in a car crash, and would probably have lived if a certain type of head restraint had been made mandatory in NASCAR. One of the main reasons this head restraint was never made mandatory was because Dale Earnhardt campaigned vigorously against it. Ooops. Did he deserve to die? Of course not. Is it poetic justice that he did? Considering the fact that other drivers died between the time of his campaigning against the restraint and his own death, yes, I'd say that is poetic justice.

This woman took a ridiculous and patently absurd political stance - very likely motivated out of dislike for Bush family politics more than anything else. It is hard to believe that any moderately intelligent and informed person could ever argue that Saudi Arabia "doesn't deserve its bad reputation" for treatment of women. The fact that she suffered the true wrath of oppressive, findamentalist Islam is a shame, but it is not a stretch to call it poetic justice. Nor is it hateful to do so.

Then again, maybe she isn't moderately intelligent after all:

She has since vowed to remain in Saudi Arabia and continue working, but she says she will never return to Riyadh and now travels with a bodyguard.

    ...

"The psychological impact is beyond description," Hatim said. "She's normally a very calm, stable woman. Now she's afraid to leave our compound."
Gee..... leave the country maybe? Duh.

    Incidentally....

The men were from Saudi Arabia's Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a 10,000-strong police force charged with enforcing dress codes, sex segregation and the observance of prayer times.
10,000 people to enforce such things? LOL.
Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my Uncle Jack off a horse." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse."

There is never a good time for lazy writing!

Something about being manhandled into a cab by men in "dresses" (as described in the article) makes me giggle.
If violence is not your last resort, you have failed to resort to enough of it.

Although anthropology has taught me not to be ethnocentric and to be unbiased and understanding about other peoples beliefs but even thinking or hearing about things like this makes my blood boil.

What made my blood boil was gender roles and biases based on religion. I don't care if the woman was American or not.

If you're saying that I should be proud of the American world view and ideology, I would have to say that I doubt I could ever be proud of this country.

In many aspects I admire and respect America, but in some of its aspects I find it to be disappointing. But that's merely my opinion. *shrugs*

Just the fact that we don't have fucked up laws/beliefs like that country is enough to make me proud of the USA.
