    connection issues

My GMud client works fine from home but when I come to school and use their wifi my client won't connect at all. Just times out over and over again. Any ideas on why its doing that and if I'll be able to fix it somehow?

I'd love to be able to thresh from school, especially when I'm stuck here all day long >_<

Heh, I'm reading this from school now. Been here, hmm, 7 hours?

As far as your problem I refer you to Rosuav or Karahd.

I'm far from Rosuav or Karahd when it comes to technical savy... but is it possible they (the school) have the port used for Thresh blocked?

Pretty sure I read of similar issues a while ago and that being a cause.

still best to talk to the experts.

Use the IP address (64.253.106.100) within GMUD, rather than a name.

If that doesn't work, open a command prompt and type:

    telnet 64.253.106.100 23

If that times out, port 23 outbound is most likely closed at the firewall. Refer to a another thread (by Rosuav I think) on how to get around this.

I'm not sure how MUD clients deal with intermediary login issues, but if there is a firewall that has port 23 locked down to login then you will have problems with outbound traffic getting through.

When using Telnet protocol from my last job I had to telnet to the local firewall, log in anonymously and then telnet to Thresh.

You can't do that unless you know the anonymous user password though. I don't know how other ports work, just that telnet port is so commonly known and standard that it is pretty much getting locked down by more and more orgs.

There are a couple of things worth trying. First off, are you actually able to access the web? Can you browse ordinary web pages?

The previous thread on the subject is here:
    http://www.thresholdrpg.com/forums/s...&threadid=2177

It may not actually be of much help to you, but check out a few of the pointers maybe. Instead of looking for an open proxy, though, there's a better solution - guaranteed legitimate, not dependant on anyone else, and fairly reliable - but you need to have a home Windows computer that you always leave running. Have a look at GetThresh: http://www.kepl.com.au/esstu/getthresh.html and if you want that for another platform, I may very well be able to provide.

Pester me through this thread or PM if you need to, I'll be at work for a few hours but after that I'll be very much available.

Larger networks usually don't do NAT (which allows anybody on the network direct access to the internet). Instead they control access via firewalls. Try pinging an external site by name or ip and see if it works.

    ping thresholdrpg.com
    if this fails then:
    ping 64.253.106.100

if both fail, you're probably not NATing and might need a mud client that allow HTTP proxying (if you can access the web, that is, via a proxy).
