Think about it. If this were a story about a group of people caught beheading an adorable puppy dog and setting it on fire for entertainment...there would be public outrage. But, because it was a troubled and depressed child...just another emo incident...people need not be shocked over it?
Excellent side point. I agree that we strangely care more about animals and are more outraged by animal cruelty than we are about mistreatment of and abuse of children or people.

Look at the Michael Vick case. His football career is over and he'll spend some serious time in prison. But other sports start routinely beat the hell out of their wives and girlfriends and almost nothing happens. Anything short of Rae Carruth just gets ignored.
