Frankly, Utugra, you have hastened the heat death of the universe by typing up that post. You used energy, and that energy has (partly) been dissipated as heat, and is no longer usable. Conservation in that sense is impossible according to the laws of thermodynamics. So it's all about balance. What's the purpose of environmental conservation? The best description I can think of (a better one would not be unwelcome) is to allow future generations to be able to make use of this planet. It's stupid to sacrifice tomorrow for the sake of today - but it's just as stupid to overly restrict today for the sake of tomorrow. As soon as anyone deifies "the environment", there's the risk of precisely that happening.
