    The First Lady

    Oprah to Back Obama

Personally, this disgusts me. Oprah has a cult following who buy and do nearly anything she says.

I just view this as a sick publicity power play by both parties. Maybe we can have the State of The Union given on Oprah's show.

A manipulative and pathetic maneuver to artificially win the women's vote away from Hilary.

Would you like it more if it was Hilary vs Oprah in nude mud wrestling? I think it's beyond great the ladies are taking such initiatives.

I really don't understand what about this is disgusting. Oprah is not a journalist or civil servant. She has every right to publically endorse whomever she wants.

I also am puzzled as to how this artificially wins the women's vote. Assuming Oprah's endorsement is sufficient for Obama to gain the majority of women voters in both the primary and general election, that would be an actual win of the women's vote. What do you mean "artificial"?

Why shouldn't Oprah back Obama? Maybe she really supports his views, ideas, and policy plans, and would actually rather see him as president than anyone else, including Hillary.

It's also odd that you assume that Hillary would automatically receive the women's vote - I don't recall seeing any statistics which ever indicated that.

Also, if Oprah's legions of fans (who for the most part admire and respect her and are not slaves to a cult), would really do everything she says, why wouldn't she just run for president herself?

    Anyway. What's wrong with Obama?

Aside from the socalist aspects of his platform? I don't know. We'll learn more as his campaign continues.

She can't afford the pay cut.
Capitalization is the difference between "I had to help my Uncle Jack off a horse." and "I had to help my uncle jack off a horse."

Candidates spend 20 million dollars to get elected just to make $200k a year, give or take.

I've never trusted someone willing to do that.

Most of the money comes from foundations and donations (at least here, I'm not entirely sure how it is in the US).

And besides, being an ex-president is much more profitable than being the president himself (you can receive up to 50k-100k for a single speech).

If that's her intent then yea it's a pathetic attempt. Hillary may grab the women's vote, but that is because she is a woman (although some may argue this). Obama is obviously not a woman.

Oprah is a pretty powerful and influential woman herself. So when she walks a presidential candidate on her show she is manipulating the political climate, or whatever. But Graeblyn is correct. This is America and it's her will to do so. Think of it as a testament to what fame and money can do for you.

That's what an election should be all about. Everyone tearing a candidate to shreds because of his POLICIES. Not because his sister's cousin's aunt's dogwalker was the subject of a scandal. (Although if he is himself the subject of a scandal, that might mean something about his character.)
