This is recount is probably the worst non fiction survival story I've ever heard. This guy's bravery is just incredible:

He stuck his head by a moving, unguarded drill bit and got his scalp ripped off? Sounds like a partial credit Darwin award.
All shrank, like boys who unaware,
Ranging the woods to start a hare,
Come to the mouth of the dark lair
Where, growling low, a fierce old bear
Lies amidst bones and blood.
Fair enough, Darion - it's interesting the way I sometimes react to such stories with indifference and amusement as you have, and other times I will cry in sympathy with the victim. I don't know what makes me go one way or the other.
This particular case upset me because Dave Holland described so vividly what he saw and what he was thinking and how he planned to escape, how he had to hold his head on top of his snapped spine as he stumbled along the road to find help, how the recovery was as bad as the accident itself when they scraped dead skin off his nerves for days afterwards.
I also found his story wonderful in so far as he uses his experience to conclude that humans will go out of their way to be a comfort and a help to even strangers in trouble.
Pretty gross. The guy should have been a little more careful than that. I'm familiar with that auger he used from a previous job (I didn't run it though). I wouldn't put my hands near it, let alone my face. It had carbide points on the end and it does go through concrete and pavement.
It's not a good idea to sniff the auger while it's running. I'm gonna have to second Darion on this one. If it was a mechanical failure of sorts then I could muster more sorrow for the guy.
Stranger, observe our laws! We have both swords and shovels and we doubt that anyone would miss you.
No matter how stupid he was, that was probably the most horrible thing I have -ever- read.
Gah!
I winced reading the article. It's horrible, though I can't help but feel like it was entirely his fault.
He got a settlement from the company that owned it due to their "not providing a safe workplace", but that's BS, IMO, if he was such an expert, why the fuck was he sticking his face near the drill bit with it powered on?
What a fucktard.
