I think things like MMA are a little different though, because with the exception of the punching and slamming, a lot of the stuff they do (the Jiu Jitsu for one) are largely based on skill. You can be an ogre and it won't help you one bit with how effective your arm bar is. I'm not saying that brute force doesn't have its place, passing guard can be about strength, hell watch any of Tito's old fights and you get some good examples... that fucker is usually twice the size of the guy he's fighting, and treats them like a rag doll... there's a couple fights I remember watching where the guy didn't stand a freakin' chance in hell. Older Rampage fights are the same way. But look at (most of) the Gracie family... legends of MMA, and most of them are small little bitches. But shit, one of them won the first 3 UFC cards... (when they were doing Grand Prix formats)... admittedly people didn't know fuck about BJJ at that point, and they've had a notoriously shitty time in cages under the UFC format now, but their art is designed to eliminate the advantages of size as much as possible.
I think when it comes down to it though, it's like the Tour De France, even if there's wide-spread doping and a doping policy you want to at least give the impression that you're doing something to prevent it and are against it fundamentally. Dana is a promoter, and a rather smart business man and is most definitely not very flexible. That's one of the huge issues right now is where Fedor is going to end up. Fedor is quite literally the biggest name in the world when it comes to heavyweight MMA fighters... he was the Heavyweight champ in Pride for 4 years. Right now he's in negotiations with both UFC and Bodog. Right now the two big issues with UFC is the money (being the best heavyweight in the world, he deserves a good deal of money... hell Cro Cop is getting paid a SHITLOAD per fight in UFC), and the second is Sambo... Sambo's another fight sport that's big in Russia... and Fedor is like the Babe Ruth of Sambo. He's literally like the spokesperson for the sport there, and competes in huge tournaments every year, and pretty much wins every year too. UFC doesn't want him doing Sambo if he's fighting for them. And apparently Fedor's camp is trying to negotiate with the UFC and the UFC's response is basically "It's our contract, or no contract" In a way it's kind of lame, in another it just shows that Dana isn't really one to back down, it'll be interesting to see what happens with all of this, but I think it's going to be a while before we see Sherk and Franca again in the UFC (even after their 1-year suspensions).
