He supports gun control, is pro-choice, and supports gay marriage. That will definitely make his path to the Republican nomination difficult. Keep in mind that only the most hardcore of a party tend to show up for primary voting.

I like him a lot as well, but he definitely has a tough road ahead of him to get the nomination.

This is just one of the many flaws with our two party dominated system right now. You have to be extreme to get nominated, and moderate to win. It is totally contradictory. This creates too great a motivation (and reward) for outright, blatant lying about where you really stand on issues.
