I imagine storing your cache that way is very inefficient for HD space, which is probably why they don't seem to do it that way. It is a shame though.

Actually, there's a pretty funky way to view the Firefox cache. In the address bar, type:

about:cache
(There aren't supposed to be spaces in this, but there appears to be one before the colon when I view this post)

Then click 'List Cache Entries' in the Disk Cache section. The 'key names' are human-readable bits of info that you'll be able to interpret. If you find the one you want, you can find its associated file name and type. Find the file, copy it elsewhere and rename it (including the appropriate file extension). Bam, good to go.

Since it's tangentially related to this topic, here is a list of various 'about:' pages in Firefox. And here is a Wikipedia page that delves into about: pages in general (not just for Firefox). I've found Firefox's about:cache and about:config to be the most useful, but they're neat in general. This could theoretically be broken off into a 'browser tips & tricks' thread, not sure if that'd be worthwhile though.
