I'm totally in favor of mandatory military service in my country, for a few reasons. For one, I think it would lead to more appropriate funding if everyone had firsthand experience the equipment, accomodations, etc. But more importantly, I think, people would be more focused on the consequences of the country's foreign policy decisions, instead of hastily or carelessly making some decision since it doesn't impact them one way or another.
