Xaxer, Good News also sells.
Now you see the fatal problem with good news. It's harder to do than bad news. Bad news has an accident report to go along with it. It has a casualty list and one or more emergency management, police, or government officials making documentation on the case. I can reconstruct an entire accident scene just by seeing the report a DPS trooper files.
I'm about to do a story on a police chief that's retiring after 34 years of service to the same city. This is going to be one of those good news, heartland stories. I don't get a sheet of paper to write the story up from, though. I have to go to his house, talk with him for hours, listen to his stories, go over his old photographs, talk to the people that worked with him, and then put all that together. Good news is hard to do, but yes, it sells. I'm of the opinion that it sells BETTER than bad news. I know for a fact it does in my small market, and I feel very strongly it does nation-wide, as well.
One of my favorite good news stories ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi137...elated&search=
