I'm not sure how relevant this is in this particular case, but it's worth considering the possibility that some of the 'strange' quotes are attributable to suspect translation. It's fairly normal to translate something twice and get two very different meanings out of it (I'm sure we've all seen foreign flicks with the English soundtrack and subtitles on...). Normally for games/books/etc, this is an inconvenience, but nothing earth-shattering. With religious texts though, when you've got people claiming they're the word of God and trying to treat every sentence as divine historical fact... it can be a bit of a problem.

Just an idea, and as I said, it really may be totally irrelevant in this case.
