The Gnostics were an exclusive group who claimed to have the inner, secret knowledge, which the rest of the world didn't have. Much of their doctrine was simply incorrect, however, and I wouldn't base anything on their texts; the quotes given there contradict what is in the primary gospels.
Is there truth in that? Quite possibly it is true that the Gnostics had documents stating this sort of thing. (I wouldn't know, I'm not a scholar.) But Jesus and Peter would not have said the things quoted there.
