    Surprises inside Microsoft Vista's EULA

    A very good read:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10...eula_analysis/

An EULA is the End User Licence Agreement. It is usually implicit that you concede to it upon use of their software.

Anyway, for those interested in MODERN (not OS/2) operating systems, this might be a good read if you were thinking of upgrading to Vista in January.

Hmm, yes. Well, I think that Vista probably has some OS/2 code in it. XP certainly does. It's just been sullied

What a Eula. What a Eula. "No publishing inconvenient benchmark results." Great.

As to moving licences, though, that's almost here with XP and the pesky "Windows Product Activation". If you tell the customer disservice representative that you've moved your Windows licence, they mightn't give you an activation code.

    UPDATE

Microsoft backtracks on Vista transfer limits

However, the new restriction prompted an outcry among hardware enthusiasts and others. Microsoft is returning the licensing terms to basically what they were in Windows XP--users can transfer their license to a new PC an unlimited number of times, provided they uninstall and stop using it on the prior machine.

The software maker said it paid attention to the response both directly to the company and on blogs and decided to reverse course. Microsoft had hoped to use the change to aid its ongoing efforts to thwart piracy.

    That's good news. Cool.

Of course, for many people, this has minimal to no effect. I imagine the majority of people get a new Windows license whenever they buy a new computer.

But still, it is nice that they did this.

Then again, since they know this affects very few people, perhaps this was the PR plan all along. Perhaps they planned to make this change nearer when Vista came out to generate some goodwill and excitement.

More likely they stuck clauses in, expecting that nobody would read them. Then when they got caught out, they did the only thing possible, and retracted.

    I'm cynical.
