    Threshold Chat Room

I know at one point we use to have a chat room when Threshold would go down. Everyone would gather there and talk until Admin came on and explained what was going on.

I know now we don't have one and I'm bummed because it was always nice to gather with the other Threshers and chat until things got straightened out.

Is there any hope for another chat room and out of curiosity how many of you would be interested in another chat room?

It was always handy to have the chat room, because it helped to point out whether or not there was a server-wide problem that was affecting a bunch of people, or if it was just me. Also, if I was looking to play, it helped to at least be able to yak at the players.

I'd love it to return. However, it needs a collection of features, some of which are nearly incompatible.

    * Separate hosting. The more separate, the better. Different location, different ISP, the works. Otherwise, whatever knocked Thresh off might have knocked the chat server off too.
*Zero maintenance. Can't have Ari/Dal spending all their time on something as auxilary as this.
    * 100% uptime. Absolutely no use having it if it happens to be down when it's needed. (Note that zero maintenance means that if it goes down, it might well stay down for a long time.)
*Some kind of login. The old chat room let you log in as anyone - including someone else's name (assuming they weren't on chat at the time).

Unfortunately, it would be practically impossible for anyone to build a system that fulfils all these requirements. The only thing I could think of would be to daily export the Thresh passwords list, send them to this other server, and have it know who's who - which has the significant risk of password discovery during transmission, not something to be considered lightly.

However, it would be rather handy to have a chat room. If someone has 24x7 hosting available, it wouldn't be hard to stick a little chat server on port 23, and maybe even arrange DNS records, so you just connect to chat.thresholdrpg.com - that way you have it in your MUD client. I'd offer my own server, but it's not quite 24x7, and doesn't have a fixed IP.
