Newegg.com is running a special, has been for a few weeks: for $359, you get a geforce 7800gt and a free eVGA SLI motherboard. I bought all this stuff just before Christmas, and assembled an entirely new system:

    $359 - video card/mobo
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130238
    $81 512x2 Corsair Valueselect PC3200 ram
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145440
    $103 250 GB SATA2 WD hard drive(8MB cache)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822144417
$99 Aspire X Navigator ATX case w/500 watt PS
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811144125
    $202 AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103603

    Total=$844

I splurged a little on the case and HD. You could find a good case+PS for probably $50-70, and if you already have an SATA or ata 133 drive, your system wouldn't suffer because of it. You could also find an athlon 3200+ for about $160 if money is a factor. Right there you'd be saving about $180(if you supply the HD, get the cheaper case and processor) and still have a very awesome system.

I like that newegg site, they have good prices and I think their selection is better than "tigerdirect", which is supposed to be another good place.

My next computer will be one I build myself. I'm just waiting for Zyth to give me the money for it.

I'm building a new computer myself. The current one is about 5-6 years old I think. I'm getting everything from newegg.com and I've found them to be a very customer friendly place. As I am pretty broke most of the time I've got to buy it piece by piece.

    What I have so far:

    Case -
POWMAX CP0327PL-4 Window Black/Silver SGCC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply (The power supply will have to be upgraded btw.)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811145047

    Monitor -
    SVA 7005LB 2-Tone 17" 12ms LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 500:1 Built in Speakers 0.264mm Pixel Pitch (A step up from a 15" 1024x768)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16824165012

    RAM -
    CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) System Memory
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145525

    CD-RW/DVD-ROM-
    LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM 52X CD-R 32X CD-RW 52X CD-ROM 1.5M Cache ATAPI/E-IDE Combo Drive - OEM (Old comp doesn't even read DVD's)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106995

    CPU-
Intel Pentium 4 630 Prescott 800MHz FSB 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 EM64T Processor (Old processor is a Celeron. It blows donkey cock)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819116198

    Motherboard-
ABIT Fatal1ty AA8XE Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 925XE ATX Intel Motherboard (This wasn't actually my first choice. They discontinued the original board because they slapped the "Fatal1ty" on it. Apparently he's the Michael Jordan of computer gaming. Same Motherboard - Different price - overclocked out of the box.)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813127189

Still to come: (Things I haven't ordered yet)

    Power Supply-
RAIDMAX AURORA RX-580F ATX 580Watts Power Supply 115/230 V UL, FCC, CSA, CB, TUV, CE (I have to upgrade the power supply for two reasons. First, the one that comes with the case is a piece of shit. Secondly, because my motherboard requires it. And always listen to your mother)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817152022

    Graphics Card-
eVGA 256-P2-N517-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card (All I can say about this thing - Max Resolution 2048x1536@85Hz)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130249

    Hard Drive-
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive (When I filled my 32GB memory with songs and Family Guy clips I figured I should get a bigger HD so I went with this)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148065

    External Hard Drive-
Western Digital Dual-option USB 2.0 WDXUB1200BBNN 120GB 7200 RPM 2MB Cache USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (To back up my files and to store all of my non-kid friendly stuff. I have nieces and nephews that play on my comp and this would be the perfect place to put adult stuff)
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822144382

So that's the comp I'm building right now. Altogether I estimate at about $1300. I figure I shouldn't have to upgrade it for another few years and it'll let me finally play all those games I bought but couldn't.

Nice comp - only thing I'd change is try get a GTX 256mb card instead of a GT if you can afford it. Update to previous post - I'm running a X1900XTX now instead of the 7800.

Okay! Need some advice! I am thinking of buying a new PC for gaming. The PC shop already has a package deal which goes like this:

    ================================
    Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz (630+) LGA775 CPU with 2MB L2 Cache / 800 Mhz FSB

    Intel 915 LGA775 Chipsets Motherboard

200 GB 7200 RPM Hard Disk 8MB Cache

    512 MB PC3200 DDR RAM

ATI Radeon 9550 3D Graphics Card 256 MB

    16x Dual Layer DVD Writer

Win XP Home CD & License

Other stuff (3D stereo sound, keyboard, 17" LCD monitor, mouse, speaker system)
    ===============================

All this at about US$985. But it is fully customizable as well. Is it worth it? Which component should I upgrade?

BTW: Here's the rest of the hardware offered by the shop. The prices are in SG dollars. Other hardware

What in the world will you ever do with 770 GB of HD?
