This could possibly be the coolest undertaking by congress ever...I totally want to be a congressman now!
"Believe it or not, I'm a complete catch."
I totally agree the BCS is in a serious need of an over haul, preferably to playoff system similar to the ones that have been discussed in these forums. Or at the very least similar to the playoff system division two has at the moment.
However, I REALLY hate to hear that Congress wants to get their money grubbing meat hooks in to yet another sport. It is an amateur sport for Crying Out Loud! Why can they not fix world hunger or at the least the homeless issues in America? Why can they not fix their own regulations that allow the politicians to rape us? Why can they not fix all of the issues that people face with real problems that are directly or indirectly caused by them meddling?
Instead of worrying over the fact that fuel prices are so high that people can ill afford to heat their homes they say that the BCS is Evil and has to be regulated because it is seriously flawed! Oh yea please over look the fact that it is a billion dollar industry that we need to find a way to get more of that money so we can get paid more for doing nothing!
I personally hate it when the government tries to stick their collective noses in business that should have nothing to do with them.
The College Bowl games are a BILLION dollar industry! So you're saying that Congress should let a billion dollar industry go to shit? Protecting a billion dollar industry sounds like a great way to ensure the economy stays healthy. You also have to remember that all of Congress isn't focused on this issue. This is something that ONE subcommittee is looking at. There are committees for everything you can imagine, so when one issue gets media attention it's not like the rest of Congress stops working on every other issue that is important to us.
"Believe it or not, I'm a complete catch."
You are making my point even though I do not think you are meaning to. We need less government in our lives not more!
#1 the mentalities of allot of people now a days is we have to have Big Brother do everything for us, free enterprise no longer truly exists. The government thinks they have to run everything and tell everybody how to live, what to do, how to spend their money etc. It is getting to the point that I cannot take a dump in my own home without calling congress and asking permission… (Exaggeration but you get my point)
#2 the only reason they are getting involved is so they can see how much of the pie they can get not because the system is in need of fixing, we have allot bigger issues for them to concentrate on that has nothing to do with college sports. Hockey has been in serious trouble the past few years far more than college football but they do not get involved because the money is not what it is with the BCS and colleges. That is just one example.
#3 they already have their hands deeply in peoples pockets, they have taken well over 40% of my earnings this year not including Real Estate taxes, Sales taxes and not even including the 46 cents plus on the dollar they have on gasoline and all the other things they regulate and charge outrageous taxes on. The majority of the American people have taken the attitude that the government has to do everything for them. The only person(S) I will rely on to provide for myself and my family is myself and my wife. I do not need nor want the government running every little thing in my life. They need to make government smaller, stop nosing around in things that have nothing to do with them or our safety as a nation.
Bottom line is IMHO I do not think they should have anything to do with college sports. I am an advocate of smaller government not bigger government. Maybe I am not making any sense but that is how I feel about it.
You're definitely not making sense to me...
The BCS isn't a free market issue. Unless you honestly think that another college football system can compete. I think it is clearly a monopoly, which means government should step if it is being mismanaged. There is no way for the market to correct the issue itself. Those managing it will just run it into the ground and ruin a billion dollar industry.
I'm not sure how much of those billions of dollars the government sees, but I'm sure they see some of it. But so do a lot of citizens. Not only is the government protecting its own income, it's also protecting the income of citizens that make money off of the BCS.
I'm failing to see how stepping on on the mismanagement of the BCS equates to the government trying to regulate "every little thing" in your life, and it isn't making government any bigger. The only thing that is happening here is that the existing structure of the government is investigating the management of a monopoly. Something I think they should do.
[edit] And as a last note, they aren't talking about increasing any taxes, so accusing them of trying to take more money is really out of left field here as well...

Daryonn and Gadiantor both make excellent points, and I agree with the sentiments of both.
But for this issue specifically, I think (as Gadiantor states) the salient point is that this is a monopoly, and thus there is absolutely no way for the market to correct the situation.

JoePa is awesome."You can take the BCS and shove it, as far as I am concerned. I've said that 50 times over the last 10 years," Paterno said.
He is right on the money.
