Pets Not the Only Animal Victims

    Dolphin Rescue

This has been fascinating to me. I don't really know how it makes me feel except that you'd think zoos would have a plan for these sorts of things. I wonder if any endangered species lost their lives in zoos because of Katrina?

Please understand, I am not down on the zoo for this, I just was a little surprised by it.

Ugh. I hate to think of those guys being forced to suddenly learn to defend themselves in the wild when they've been in captivity all their lives.

Interesting article, though. Thanks for posting it!

I just read a story in People magazine today about the animals that were in Hurricane Katrina. One picture showed 3 dolphins that had been relocated into a hotel swimming pool and said that other hotels around the area had accepted marine animals into their pools too.
    GFH!

I was fascinated by the story of the dolphins and sea lions too. From the home page of the oceanarium, I learned what they had done to try ensure the animals safety before the storm and what was done afterwards.

You have to hunt a bit on the page to find their Katrina scrapbook:

Also, the Audobon Zoo in New Orleans seems to have done fairly well and did not flood, but the Aquarium of the Americas did not fare so well with the power outage.

    Thanks for those links.

It's good to hear that among so much negativity, you can point to things such as people willing to risk their lives even just for animals. It's such a contrast, and so ironic, that some of these people were risking their lives to save their animal charges, but were eventually driven off not by the storm, but by the rising tide of human violence in the neighborhood. :s

"Forman himself refueled the generator that powered life-support systems during the storm.

But power eventually failed, and aquarium workers were driven from the facility by violence in the nearby business and tourist districts."

Last I heard they had caught two and the rest were being coy! That was on the news last night 9/16/05.

    Silly dolphins....

I guess they are well enough if they are playing hard to get!
