My husband and I have one that plays .avi

Its a Pioneer. model number DVD- 575A (not sure it will be the same in the states)

We paid about hmm $220ish for it. It was definatly a worth while investment.

Is that also a region free DVD player?

Yes. Being from the states we have several zone 1 and 2 dvd's.

    According to the box:

    DivX Video playback (DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x)
    DVD- Audio/Video/SACD Multi.Compatible
High Quality Video 108MHz/12bit D/A converter
    Dual PureCinema Progression Scan
DVD,DVD-R/RW,CD, CD R/RW, SVCD, VCD Playback
    Windows Media Audio, MP3 Compatible

HMM Seems the model number is actually DV-575-s
