I'm trying to figure out the Gomery inquiry and what it revealed. How much is Chretien guilty of, and is Martin being scapegoated at all?
Martin always plays the shocked victim whenever these kind of revelations come to light.
This is a shitty situation. As shitty as it is, and I think the Liberals are pretty much done, the idea of Stephen Harper as PM is frightening. Harper and even Mulroney in a speech were for sending troops to Iraq, and Harper is against same sex marriages. I'm fiscally conservative, yet socially liberal minded. I live in a very conservative province(Alberta, birthplace of the Reform Party), and this has all I've heard and read in the news over the last few days.

So, could someone please dumb it down for me, and explain why this inquiry is damaging to the liberals.

The problem with the Liberal party, which I have always believed, is that they think they rule by Divine Right. They don't stand for anything except being in power. They will do or say or promise anything it takes to get votes, then turn around and do nothing but make sure they stay in power for the next election. As far as the Gomery Inquiry goes, the only thing anyone should be surprised about is that anyone would be surprised by it. What else do you expect from politicians? Geez, bribes, graft, influence peddling, nepotism, all sorts of shenanigans. Business as usual.

I used to be a PC, but there is no way in any circumstance that I would vote for the new Conservative party.

Sadly they will always have that rightwing base, but they have taken a (in my mind) bad turn towards catering to people who promote hate and oppression. It really frustrates me that so many people in this province think it's perfectly acceptable and even proper to promote hatred and intolerance. You'd think the whole last century never happened.

The NDP will benefit from this, as will the Bloc Quebecois. My hope is that more people will look to the alternative parties, and see that the Green party is actually a very serious party, with a very acceptable message.

Don't be surprised if we're voting again within the next 6 months.

There was a program to make Quebec feel more like they were part of Canada so they wouldn't seperate, most of it was advertising Canadian services to Quebec. The Liberals used this federally funded program to funnel money to friends, relatives, people that had done them favors in the past, etc. Also, some of it ended up back in the Liberal party coffers. It was fairly significant funds involving quite a few people. PM PM is trying to make it seem that all the people that screwed people over were cronies of JC (which they generally were), so he's the one cleaning house. If people buy that, we'll see.

I know that Martin wasn't completely ignorant of the sponsorship deal, but i don't think he was in charge of it either. Personally, i voted NDP in the last election for a couple of reasons; 1) The Liberals have had thier turn, its time somebody else had a chance to govern, and 2) I trust Steven Harper about as far as i can throw his expressionless ass. He's like a canadian Al Gore, only Conservative. If the election does come, my vote probably won't change unless it comes to light that Martin is completely innocent, Harper stops acting like a living undead PC, or Layton put his foot in his mouth.

The scandal itself cost taxpayers millions and millions of dollars. That's bad. The Inquiry is costing almost as much. That's worse. I'm not gonna start a sovereignty debate, nor a cultural debate, i just wish we could all get along.

How is spending on an inquiry into what happened worse than the actual theft? Thats about the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.

If you're worried about the money (or principle for that matter), NDP is not the way to vote:

They basically sold the party out for $4.6 billion in special interest money. That works out pretty cheap for Martin and the Liberals, because its not actually their money.
