Rehnquist
According to this:
http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Sa...78908122&path=!nationworld&s=1037645509161
(the link seems to work, but doesn't show up right)
Dr. Leonard Wartofsky, a thyroid-cancer expert at Washington Hospital Center, said that the combined chemo-therapy-radiation indicates that Rehnquist has anaplastic thyroid cancer, a fast-growing form that is almost always fatal.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer:
The prognosis of this disease is poor. Less than 5% of patients survive 5 years. Most people do not survive longer than 6 months.
from: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/000352.htm
It does not look good for Rehnquist if what the cancer expert is guessing to be true is. This story hasn't been getting much play, I had no idea how serious his cancer was, but it looks like there will be a supreme court vacancy soon, its hard to imagine him staying on for long if he does have this cancer.

My father is a radiation oncologist and said that the prognosis is likely even worse-- six months. His statement is there are no current therapies-- radiation or chemo... and its agressive so surgical is ruled out.
I think its rather fortunate, if you are like me a conservative, that President Bush was reelected. I think odds are we will begin to see the court unwind very quickly.

This is precisely why I am so depressed about the re-election of Bush. I wish the issue of the Supremes was given more focus by the media, since the likely appointing of three justices by this presidency is really the most lasting impact either of the two candidates would have left on the country.

Dude I would have that *you* would have loved Rhenquist, the amount he wanted to leave in state's hands was tremendous.
Anyways, if he's replaced by Scalia as CJ and Scalia is replaced by a conservative the composition of the court really doesnt change.
