This is a poor argument for 2 reasons:Originally posted by Grantref
You can hardly call these newspapers leftist when they promote capitalism 24/7. If you argue they're pro-Democrat, that may be true, but that's partisanship, not leftism. They show no bias towards collectivism, socialism over capitalism, or government ownership of business, which is real leftism.
1) It is inaccurate to say you can only be leftist if you support leftist economic issues. There are leftist social issues as well. There are also leftist foreign policy issues. Not everything is about economic policies.
2) The main stream media actually DOES heavily support leftist economic issues like those you list.
They clearly want national health care.
A few weeks ago the main story in Newsweek made very stringent calls for government funded day care for both working moms AND stay at home moms.
In our local newspaper, every 5 seconds they are having a fit about how the government should buy the water utility. They never even give 2 lines of print to presenting the other side.
This local issue is a perfect example of why a biased media is bad. We live next to a park that is owned by the company who owns the water utility. One of the reasons people want to buy it up is so they don't have to worry about this really nice park being transformed at some point to something other than a park (or having part of it transformed, or charging admission, or all sorts of other bad things). We go to this park a couple times a week with our daughter. We love it. We would HATE IT if something bad happened to this park. Our property value would also suffer.
Despite all this, I still really despise the fact that our local newspaper refuses to give us the straight story on this issue. I feel incredibly uninformed about the issue because I know I am only getting one side of the story. As a result, I don't get involved. I don't sign the petitions when people come by. If the newspaper would give a full accounting of the issues then I'd actually be able to reach an informed decision. Since I cannot (without doing a bunch of research on my own, which for this issue I really don't have time to do), I am unable to get active. It is very likely that those who support the buyout are losing out on at least one potentially helpful and active family of supporters.
Those are a few examples. There are many others.
The majority of the news media are definitely leftist, not just socially but economically as well.
