    help if you can

Hey everyone. I've just arrived at University of Stirling in Stirling, Scotland. It took me a while to download a useable version of GMUD due to the school's security precautions, but I managed it. Now I have a bigger problem. I cannot connect to Thresh... I'm guessing it's the infamous college campus firewall.

If it is indeed a firewall, does anyone have any advice for bypassing it or know anything that would not be blocked? I don't know much about this stuff so any advice would be useful. Thanks!

I do not know all that much about this technical stuff but you might be able to log on through a Local Proxy or something like that but you will need the name of the proxy to make it work.

I would suggest that you try to ask someone there for help or search their internal homepage for clues if they have such a thing.

Make sure you look under the news and discussion thread... the IP has changed for Threshold recently.

The new IP number for Threshold is: 64.253.106.100
    port 23 still.

Not sure if it's something as simple as that but it could be!

Test out the new IP number and then keep us updated.

If you can access your browser's settings, you'll probably need to copy some of that info into GMud. In Internet Exploder, choose Tools menu, Internet Options (I think this is also in the Control Panel). On the Connections tab is a button for LAN Settings - that's where the proxy's configured.

I'm presently working through a corporate proxy, and the way it works is:
    1) GMud connects to **.**.**.** port 80 (this information copied from IE's LAN Settings)
    2) Text to output on connect:
    CONNECT 64.253.106.100:23 HTTP/1.0

    3) I say Connect, it connects to Thresh!

There's a thread on this under Questions and Assistance: Playing at Work. http://www.thresholdrpg.com/forums/s...p?threadid=899 That's where this was all discussed in excruciating detail... Otherwise, ask a question here and I'll answer it.

    Best of luck.

I stole this from the other thread you linked:

    OK... the steps are:
    1) Make sure you really do have internet access... you can't play Threshold without.
    2) Open up a command line.
2.a) On Windows, either look for an "MS-DOS Prompt" icon (or similar), or select Start... Run... and type 'command' (no quotes), hit Enter.
2.b) On real operating systems, the users already know how to access command prompts.
2.c) A command prompt usually looks like a black window with white text, and a cursor. It accepts commands typed at the keyboard, and executes them when you hit Enter. (Sorry if this is too basic for you; sooner or later someone will come along needing all this I reckon!)
    3) Type:
    ping thresholdrpg.com
This should show you either an error message, or some results. If it doesn't stop by itself after five seconds or so, press Ctrl-C.
    4) If you get an error message saying "No route to host" or similar, you probably need a proxy. If you get several lines talking about responses received, you definitely don't need a proxy.

I followed these steps and I was able to ping Thresh...

As for the other things, I have no idea what a proxy is/does and I'm not sure where to put that new IP address. I just know to type in thresholdrpg.com and port 23 in the world list.

    *EDIT*
Oh um, I just tried connecting again, and I didn't do anything differently this time that I can remember, but it worked! Thanks a lot guys.

Yay! Well, something must have worked

If you can ping Thresh, as you say, then you don't need to worry about a proxy. So all should be well!

Typing "command" in the run box will only work for Win9x. For all other versions, it's "cmd".

Just so you know for future reference where you type thresholdrpg.com in the world list is where you would put the IP. Some people use the IP address instead of the dynamic(?) one which is thresholdrpg.com. Which has changed or is changing to newthresholdrpg.com
