Moves to bring back the draft.

I don’t know much about this website, but the following is probably pertinent to quite a few Threshers regarding moves to possibly reintroduce the draft.

Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year, http://www.hslda.org/legislation/na...s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

Its all politics, the US armed forces is meeting its recruiting and has been for a while. Some politician figured out it could be a way to change minds about Iraq so they started making noise about it. The armed forces probably say there is no need for a draft, but I'm too lazy to go look it up.

I'm betting the bill is either completely misrepresented, or various positions on it are. If a draft was planned, it would be all over everything, I can't see the press letting that slide.

I've done a bit more google searching and found out a few more things:

-The bill isn't really misrepresented, you can read it here:
    http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:H.R.163:
-The bill was introduced to congress on 1/7/2003
-The bill was has not had any major action since 2/3/2003
-May 04 has seen a lot of articles published stating that it will be introduced by June 05, but I can’t find anything at all to verify this. Though there are a few comments about the draft boards getting new funding (which again is old news).
-It might be that the Nader camp is pushing this barrow, because some of the articles I read say that many Democrats and Republicans are not hostile to the bill (including Kerry/Bush).
