    AIM Advertisements

    I was asked to post this in the forums. I have found a way to disable the advertisements on the new AIM. Actually, there is still one advertisement running in the add spot on my AIM, but it doesn’t have any sound and it never changes.

    In the interest of giving credit, I found this solution here in the negative comment about an AIM add remover program.

    Anyway, here is what you do:

    1. Go to the AIM folder in Your Program files.

    2. Open 'AIM.odl' using a text editor.

    3. Delete the following lines:
    on_group(5)
    { load_ocm advert required }
    on_group(11)
    { load_ocm advert required }

    4. Go back to the AIM folder in Your Program files and delete the file called 'advert'.

    Woo!

    Power to the People!

    Good job Damieux.

    It is funny to see them get hammered now in response to their extremely annoying new ads. I don't use AIM so I haven't seen them myself, but I keep hearing about them.

    The funny part is that people did not seem to mind the ads before that were not obtrusive and did not have sound.

    Basically, they got greedy and so now people are driven to disable them completely.

    I still get a stupid AOL Broadband advertisement. Is that the best I can do?

    That's the add that I still have. It doesn't have any sound and doesn't play video, so its pretty easy for me to ignore. I suspect there is a way to get rid of it, but I don't know what it is. I just followed the directions that I found. Maybe we'll find the way to get rid of it too, or maybe someone more tech savvy will tell us.

    I never log out of AIM. Even when I sleep it usually goes, so I always have to end up turning my speakers off when I'm away ever since the new sound ads came up. So at any rate Damieux, THANK YOU!

    I am using anti-ad&pop-up proggy called AdMuncher and it automatically takes care of all the Aim/Icq ads as well as most of the website ads. So far it has saved me downloading 184Mb of adverts since September '03.

    I followed these steps and its not quite working for me. I'm still getting ads for inkjet ink once in a while but mostly its the AOL 9 ads.

    For no adds you can always download trillian which allows you to use one program for aim, icq, yahoo, msn and it automatically logs all your sessions where aim forces you to turn logging on which i never remember to do.

    Trillian also keeps all chat windows within one container.
    Why I don't use trillian I can't remember.

    trillian website

    And like the others have said, thanks Damnieux. I hated those ads with sound.

    Sadly, aol will probably have your config file sent to them at startup and if those lines aren't there, it will put them back in and replace the missing file and if you make the file read only to prevent it, they will reject your session. Just a feeling.
    Don't get too perky!

    This is the same result that I got (although I haven't noticed the inkjet ink one). This really just removes the adds with the streaming video and the sound.

    I thought the remaining add was just the same series of images scrolling repeatedly, but I haven't paid attention. I find it easy to ignore.
