I have tried to learn and use reddit many times over the last couple years. I have an account and I read and occasionally post there, but I am still a total reddit noob.
Who here uses reddit?
Who here at least has a reddit account?

I've at least got a Reddit account, just started using it in conjunction with Planetside 2.
I read random articles and r/nosleep, because I think those are hilariously awesome.
Other than that, I'm a reddit-noob.
I have an account, but apart from reading the odd AMA and participating in a discussion of PEP 463, I don't do much there. Not really into the culture of the place.
I have a reddit account.
I use reddit numerous times a day and post fairly frequently.
What did you want to know?
I have an account but rarely post. I generally just read when I have a few minutes to kill and I already read the newspaper.
I think your caution is warranted. The article here is a good primer: http://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion
You may consider purchasing some advertising. It's relatively inexpensive and redditors (I think) are good at clicking on ads that interest them. You may want to advertise on the forums that specifically are frequented by people who are interested in text-based communication, such as the role play subreddits (penpal, role play,) or other subreddits where they might be interested in text-based socialization (togetheralone).
Otherwise... You may be able to either create a Threshold subreddit, a FrogDice subreddit, or maybe a MUD subreddit. So long as you don't shamelessly self-promote, you should be good. Unfortunately, that also applies to anyone putting forth media links on your behalf in exchange for rewards.
Thanks for the tips, indi!
There actually is a MUD specific sub-reddit there already. reddit.com/r/mud.
It might be a good place to put up a recruitment post. Although, the caveat about self-promotion probably still stands.
