Wikileaks

What are everyones feelings and thoughts around the recent disclosures on wikileaks, and the subsequent actions taken against the site and against Assange?

Fareed Zakaria I think offers an interesting and unique perspective.

If this particular one guy does end up getting arrested, then I'm sure WL will find a new home. The world needs those sorts of sites - the absolute extreme of information openness - even though no government will ever enjoy their presence.

Wikileaks is only a positive thing from both a left and right point of view.

It's not a "left" or "right" issue. It's an issue of accountability. If the government can do whatever it likes and nobody's there to reveal things it's trying to hide, then it doesn't matter which wing they're in, it's tyranny.

I see what you did there.

The site's operators have a tremendous responsibility to frame their data in context. Not saying it's happened, but for example ... you can't show a squad of troops mowing down civilians and leave out the video footage that led up to the incident. I think a place like wikileaks has tremendous potential to put coalition troops needlessly in harm's way, especially if the "leakers" out there release damning information free from sensible context.

Really this is a job the news media should be doing. Reporters ask questions and (are supposed to) present all sides of the story.
