One of the most vile scenarios I've come across on radio.

There are some shock jocks on Australian Radio who run a show where they strap people to a lie detector and get loved ones (sic) to ask difficult questions.

A mother brought her 14 year old daughter onto the show against her will. The following is a transcript of a part of that show:

Sandilands: How are you (girl’s name)?

Girl: I’m scared. It’s not fair.

Jackie O: It wouldn’t be fair on any kid, I tell you, I sympathise with you . . .

Sandilands: She is scared, everyone, yeah.

(The girl is then asked whether she’s wagged school. She denies it, and the lie detector registers a lie.)

Jackie O: OK, what’s your next question, mum?

Mother: OK, Have you had sex?

Girl: I’ve already told you the story of this. Don’t look at me and smile because it’s not funny. (Shouts) Oh, OK, I got raped when I was 12 years old.

(Silence)

Sandilands: Right. (Pause.) And is that the only experience you’ve had?

Mother: I only found out about that a couple of months ago. Yes, I knew . . .

Girl: And yet you still ask me the question.

Mother: I was, the question was, have you had sex, other than that.

That's not to say that the radio station and everyone else involved shouldn't be horse drawn and quartered.

I read about this other day as well. Fucking despicable. What kind of twisted bitch would do that to her daughter? I mean, everybody involved was either stupid or scum, most of them were both, but a mother has a fucking duty to her children.

I hope the poor girl is getting some help. And I hope the woman that finally had the sense to put a stop to the bullshit takes a good hard look at herself and thinks about the fact that she makes money off of this shit.

Hopefully people are putting pressure on the companies that advertise on this station. "Shock jocks" live for bad publicity, so unless advertisers start pulling out they aren't going to suffer much from this situation. I don't think it would take many angry phone calls/emails towards advertisers to convince some of them that they don't want to be associated with this though. Hitting these idiots in the pocket book will have far greater effect than giving them bad publicity.

Last I heard the public/public officials are surrounding the girl with all counseling efforts and such.

As a radio jock myself, I too, found it awful. I've read a few apologies from the shock jocks themselves saying everyone was just in shock that nobody knew what to say/do after such a bomb dropped.

Most live talk radio shows run off a 2-3 second delay (at least in canada) so they can bleep out any unfortunate words.

I don't think that there's any excuse for Jackie O or Kyle. They knowingly strapped down a 14 year old to a lie detector test against her will, and asked her question about her sex life.

By definition, any sex she's had is non consensual.

They knew they were going there. They might not have expected her to yell out about being raped, but wtf WERE they expecting? Seriously, if they didn't think this through then they were insanely moronic. If they did, they are insanely moronic and sociopathic.

I agree that by just putting a 14 year old in that situation was a giant mistake right away. As soon as sex was the topic, it should have been immediately stopped.

We live in a sick sick world where underage sex and sexual assault are used as topical draws to get attention. I do my part by not watching/listening to these types of programs, but most people would rather watch the program, and assuage their guilt by talking about how horrible it is after the fact.

Kestra, I think it might be problematic to insist so loudly that the mother's behavior was abhorrent when you only make passing comment about this being the "the latest manifestation of the ancient Roman Colosseum". The colosseum comment is one that is critical I think, instead you go on to slam one of the lesser perpetrators in the picture.

Further, I take exception to your position that people like this shouldn't breed. People like what? How on earth are you going to determine whether a pregnant woman is going to do something horrible 14 years into the future.

Yes, the woman, for whatever reason, chose probably the worst way possible to address her child's problems. I dare say there will always be people who make a wrong choice because they're stupid, or panicking, or evil and so on. You try and address the results of that wrong choice as best you can, and try and prevent it happening again, some how.

So I take it that the police, and child protective services are looking into the child and the mother's relationship with that child. That's proper. But iit's foul, and predictable, that the radio station gets all this publicity (which I have contributed to by posting this thread here) and will ultimately be rewarded with higher ratings and more advertising revenue.

The media feeds this. With Jon and Kate plus 8, and stunts like this, they get huge rewards for showing bad behavior. They promise great rewards for people who are badly behaved;
-exploit your 8 children and we'll give you a couple of million and a new house
-get a fertility treatment to have octuplets while living on the poverty line and we'll give you a talk show
-go on the jerry springer show dressed up as a klansman in nappies married to a black 12 year old lesbian.

This is a thing bigger than badly behaved individuals.

Most things posted on internet forums are. :) The more vehement the position, the less likely that there's any thought behind it at all....

The breeding comment was off the cuff and not to be taking literally or terribly seriously. I still question the mother's parenting abilities regardless. The fact that the mother smirked at the sex question seems to suggest a lack of empathy or just plain ignorance, or at worse indifference for her raped daughter's current mental state.
This type of radio segment serves to expose people's vulnerabilities for entertainment. Why anyone would expose themselves to this type of treatment is truly beyond me; but the phenomenon is unlikely to go away, when huge prizes and money are at stake.
There's plenty of blame to go around on this one, with most of it pointed at the mother. I hope the radio station rethinks their format given the latest outcome.
As you mentioned, the show's ratings will likely go up. People like to see, or in this case hear this kind of trash....kinda like people going to see a fight at a coliseum 1000 years ago.

Kyle Sandilands is the next generation's Eddie McGuire. He's the guy who will make thousands of people will wake up feeling better about themselves, simply because they're not him.

Now IANAL, but I'm pretty sure subjecting someone to a polygraph without express consent is illegal. I'm going to leave the issues of negligence on the part of the mother out of it because I'm not intimate with the entry conditions of the competition.

Everyone's calling for Kyle and Jackie's heads (Understandably so, in my opinion. The most experience I've had in radio is a volunteer community station and even I know that the instant the girl started saying "You know about this and it's not funny" he should have jumped 3 feet in the fucking air and land hard on that big red button marked MUTE.) but what REALLY pisses me off is that the producers and station execs seem to be walking away scot free.

These are the people who should have vetted the two entrants beforehand, who should have ensured that a 14 year old girl was not forced to humiliate herself by reliving such a traumatic experience on live radio.

Shit, ruin Sandiland's career for all I give a fuck, guy's a waste of oxygen anyway, but please don't let him be a get out of jail free card for the blackshirts AGAIN!

Sandilands has only been sacked as Australian Idol judge.

He's still employed with Austereo, but there are several things happening there.

I haven't read anything suggesting that Sandilands is taking the fall for this.

He's the only one who seems to be copping the shit for it. Jackie O has dumped chaff and gone under the radar, the producers were nothing but a 10 second koshie sideline on breakfast TV, and nobody's saying shit about the guy who actually OKed the whole thing to begin with.
