I am sure everyone has heard the news for awhile now. Geocities is closing down and later in the year there is a good chance none of the websites under it's domain will exist any longer.
I am curious if anyone knows a good reliable free webhosting site. I wanted to move the site I made for Runatsu somewhere else and I have heard a lot about several of them, but I would prefer an objective opinion.
Anyone have any ideas or advice? Any help would be great. Thank you.

I used to have a few free web hosting accounts, but one by one they've all died or become so annoying they're no use. Personally, I'd recommend just googling for 'free web hosting' and poking around for a bit.
Actually, the other thing to consider is that commercial web hosting, which won't have ads all over it, is not all that expensive. Google for 'cheap web hosting' and see what you can find. For a couple dollars a month/handful a year, you can have something reliable and ad-free.
Alternatively, if you're in a position to beg favours from some company that has web hosting, you could just host yourself off the back of something - a Thresh character site wouldn't need to be very big. For instance, www.rosuav.com is hosted off the back of www.kepl.com.au (as is The Esstu Pack, http://www.kepl.com.au/esstu/ - where RosMud is hosted), and it doesn't cost any more to host that tiny site. If you're not the IT geek for the company, consider sweet-talking him a bit - if he can help you a lot without costing himself or the company anything, chances are he'll do it!
I use lunarpages.com to host all my commercial accounts, which at the moment is only two. For less than $8 a month, I can host up to 10 Web sites on the same space and each can have their own unique domain. I've offered to host Threshold sites for several players in the past, but no one's taken me up on it. You'd have to get your own domain name ($10 a year or so) or be hosted at manascrewed.com/something.
I guess I am on the lookout for free space as well. Glad I checked this thread.
What about your ISP? Do they provide space for a website for free? My previous one did my current doesn't.

As a general rule, it's a bad idea to have your _only_ copy of anything on the web. (Actually, it's a bad idea to HAVE an "only copy" of anything. Side point.) Take a snapshot of your web site to your local hard disk - that way, if your host goes down, at least you have the content, and it's just a matter of uploading it elsewhere.Quote:

When you go looking for hosting, it'd be as well to note what you're actually after. Do you need, for instance, PHP or MySQL support? Chances are you don't (especially these days, it's easier to just code Javascript instead of PHP), but if you do, check what's available. How badly do you hate ads? I personally find those text-link ads *incredibly* annoying, because they look like meaningful content but they're just a stupid hover ad. And they're usually mistargeted anyway. Stupid ads.
Maybe I'm out of the web programming loop but isn't Javascript client-side interpretation while PHP is server-side? That's kind of like comparing apples and oranges isn't it?Quote:

Actually, the last comment was kinda tongue-in-cheek. But geocities didn't have my only copy... just the last one. Hard copies have been lost and the computer it was all originally stored on is long since trash! Unfortunately, once geocities goes down, my only copy will be on this computer. So I guess it wasn't so tongue in cheek.
You're correct, but many tasks can be done with either. With the current standards of Javascript, you can code some pretty hefty stuff that all works client-side (for instance, http://www.zizibaloob.com/convert_scg.html does a task that in days gone by would certainly have been done serverside). JS is definitely not the world's best language, but since it's supported by all the major browsers without any plugins, it's as good as pure HTML. There was a time when using serverside scripting was the only way to be sure everyone could use your site, but that time is definitely past.Quote:
