While I may lean right on some things, I'm not a Republican nor a McCain supporter -- though like you, I have no particular dislike of him either. I agree. I can't figure out if they are running some sort of deliberate trainwreck or what. It's a mess.

When I started this thread, no one knew anything about Palin. Now it's pretty evident Palin doesn't know much herself.

Honestly I think on the fruit fly thing the effort is just to make something sound silly to someone who doesn't know what the research does. You can talk about money that goes to 'fruit fly research' and to those who don't know what that research is, it sounds like you're spending money learning worthless bug facts. It's a great way to energize the base about the foolishness of government spending.

In hindsight, it would appear the choice was very bad.

Twice now a woman has been chosen as VP running mate. Both times, the person who chose a woman got beaten - badly. Does this have any long term effect on people's willingness to run with a woman?

Wow. I really really hope it doesn't have that affect. I think there are so many capable, talented, intelligent etcetc women that could take that position and do great things with it: two of my state senators come to mind.

Should it have a long term effect? No. Will it? Probably. The Republicans seemed to think Americans were stupid enough to support her just because she's a good looking woman, my guess is they now think Americans are stupid enough that they'll never vote for a woman.

I really hope you were kidding, Loigan, or that could be the most unintelligent response I've read on this forum, yet.

I think it could have been said a little more diplomatically, but the sad truth of that matter is that a large amount of the African-American population did vote for Barack Obama because he was, or at least appears to be, African-American. To say that race didn't play a role in this election would be ridiculous. It may have not been a deciding factor in everyone's mind, but the color of his skin gave him votes and lost him votes. It is sad but true.

Actually I believe Loigan's statement should be read as: "If it is safe to assume Republicans were dumb enough to vote for a hot babe then it is safe to assume blacks voted for Obama. Right? RIGHT!?!?!?!"

You have to read it with a hint of sarcasm at the quoted text.

The Black vote is always heavily weighted towards the Democrats. In almost every election since 1964, the African American vote has been over 80% towards the democrats. The list below shows how much of the Black vote went to Democratic candiates in the last five elections.

1992 83%
1996 84%
2000 90%
2004 88%
2008 95%

To argue that "a large amount of the African-American population did vote for Barack Obama because he was, or at least appears to be, African-American" is not based on any particular evidence I can see. Especially when you consider that Obama won the election by about 5 points across the board, which means that there was a swing to him from most voter groups.
