Now, that would have been funny if someone else had posted it. Especially someone who is known to have a good relationship with Anthson. From you, though, it is not. We're talking about politicians here, so please don't get as childish as they are.Quote:

As lamentable as it is, kestra doesn't respond positively to civility. He simply takes advantage of the situation and uses it as an opportunity to fire off a few more trolls. This thread is a perfect example.
Honestly, if anyone who agreed with me on the issues behaved the way kestra does, I would probably already have banned them. But because it is someone who disagrees with me on the issues I am loathe to ban them for fear people would think the person got banned for their beliefs.Quote:

But maybe this is a good time for a public warning:
Kestra, start keeping it on topic and cut it with the random, drive-by trolling, or you *will* be disinvited from the forums.
I'll give five to one odds that Kestra's response will in some way be a flame about censorship or free expression and how non-liberals want to quash it.
Any takers?
I'll take that bet, Gav.
I'm still as interested in politics as I ever was, but over time I got tired of posting here for many reasons. Here are a few:
Firstly, there was a double standard with respect to sources. If I used the NYT, BBC or Grauniad, I would be attacked for using communist propaganda whereas someone using World Net Daily, Frontpage or Free Republic would get a free pass.
Secondly, my posts might be moved or deleted without explanation – don't get me wrong, this is completely fair enough, but it's a reason I stopped spending two or three hours on a post.
Thirdly, I think there is a real tendency at the moment for conservative posters to mob left posters. Again, this is fair enough because most posters on the forums these days are conservative, but it is almost guaranteed that any post a lefty makes will be taken in the worst possible light, will be fisked, and will be subject to a circle jerk of smug attacks and I suspect that this is a reason that many lefties are no longer posting here.
When I was rereading this thread, I recall the way a conservative equivalent of a poster like Kestra was treated on my current political board. They were asked to stop trolling (which is what Ari has now done to Kestra), but when anyone made snarking comments back (which they have done here) they would also be told to stop. It keeps the mood of the forum civil and collegial. I think it would be useful if that happened on the thresh boards.

It's true, I often stray off topic, however clearly I'm not the only one.Quote:

These above quotes are just plain stupid, and should be receiving the same warning I've received.
I will go, ONCE AGAIN, on record stating that I've always appreciated the ability to express myself freely on these forums.
Malacasta's post describes pretty well why I rarely post on political related subjects in the forums. I haven't had a post deleted or moved(then again I haven't made very many), but the other things she mentions have always seemed quite true from my perspective.
I'd just like to point out that free speech is a myth, or at best is a term which is interpreted differently by different people.Quote:

There is a very specific right which is guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America. Someone more familiar with it may be about to correct me on this, but as I understand it, the First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees only that Congress shall make no law preventing free speech. (Note also that this guarantee is specific to the US. Other countries may and may not have similar guarantees, but it is futile for someone in England to plead the First Amendment.)
Nowhere, so far as I know, are citizens ever ordered to guarantee other citizens' freedom of speech. Nowhere in the constitution do I see anything that forbids one citizen (eg a moderator on these boards) to censor the words of another (eg a poster on these boards). The poster has the freedom to speak, and the moderator the freedom to delete the text. Come to think of it, there are a LOT of "moderated" forums around - that is, where someone has to review the post before it can be seen by anyone else - and nobody seems to object.
Saying "I've always appreciated the ability to express myself freely on these forums" is either wrong, brownnosing, or foolish. Unless of course this is the only place where you are able to express yourself freely, in which case I'll just point you to www.blogger.com and say "have at it". You want freedom of speech? It's not guaranteed anywhere, but there are plenty of places on the internet where you can talk freely and anonymously. Jabs at the mods here won't help anything.
