Sad Stories

Everything but the Windows and Program Files directories in my C: drive got wiped last night :*(

I lost 2 months of data accumulation, over 20,000 files in 15 gigs. Just feeling lucky I had some outdated backups

I tried to rescue but too many system files were unrecoverable. The computer just boots to dos then fails. This sucks.

There was nothing else to do but reformat and reload. It took me the whole day just to reinstall the programs I had been using safely for the past months.

If it was a virus, which i'm assume it was, that should keep it from causing more grief (right?)

If it was a virus there is a possibility that it may have gotten saved in with your backups. The only way to truely be sure is to get a virus scanner and scan them before you run any of the files you have backed up.

I'm not sure which ones are out there anymore, but there should be some free/shareware/free trial ones out there.

Another thing to watch for is that your boot disk wasn't infected, in which case the virus could've been put right back on.

Hmm, other than that I think your pretty safe.

Fortunately! There's a saviour on the way! Microsoft has announced that they're purchased a antivirus software company and that future versions of windows will come equiped with the latest and greatest antivirus software! (So like, which color is sarcasm again?)

This is almost as good as the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance (TCPA)!

The free, online virus scanner I always use is

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

It seems to do the job, and since it's online it is always up to date, which is important for virus removal.

Heh, as for the TCPA, I think it'll be the death of Microsoft and Windows. Who on earth is gonna put up with it? They're just making it easier and easier for Linux.

Aww. My computer decided to play the "let's use rebooting as an alarm clock for aelyn" game, and began randomly rebooting almost constantly this morning.

Is it definitely a virus or could it be a glitch on the HD? Either way, SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS!!!!!!!! I'd be sad if I lost all my logs and stuff. :(

Aelyn, did you know that those beeps are codes to tell you what is wrong?

Pull out your motherboard manual and see what kind of problem that series of beeps corresponds to.

Rofl. It corresponds to the timing of the computer resetting itself.
It beeps everytime it starts a boot. Therefore.. rebooting every 10 seconds... beep beep beep. :P

He's talking about POST codes, Aelyn. All computers beep when they start up. Different beeps mean different things. Go to www.bioscentral.com and look up your motherboard's BIOS.

I think she's aware of that, and from the sounds of her problem it isn't anything the motherboard is aware of.

The 'beep' 'beep' of her post, just relates to each reboot :) She could've easily said 'reboot' 'reboot'.

Here is the saddest news ever.....The comm folks finally figured out that thresholdrpg.com is not a site that I need to do my job and has blocked it...I can still get to threshold-rpg.com, but that doesn't do me any good for the forums :(

OMFG! it happened again!

This time my whole second drive with all the recent Threshold stuff got wiped. Not just logs but histories, events and future plans. :( The drive just sits there taunting me with unformated messages now.

Is there anyway to recover the files from an unrecognized drive? It wont even show up in Norton's unerase prompt.

There are companies that specialize in data recovery. Not sure it is worth it to you to spend the money for that, but many of these companies can get data back from even burned, mutilated other wise "destroyed" disks.

You've got some insane stuff going on with your PC.

I would highly suggest you invest in some offline storage. Perhaps an old HD that you put into an external HD enclosure and then use as an external USB HD or something like that.

I'm not sure if this will help, but my last effort would be to remove the hard drive itself and see if you can't mount it in someone else's computer. If it is an unrecognized drive, your data may still be accessible. Don't give up too early. Call around to some friends or family members with computers who can help you recover if possible.

I had a neighbor who helped me retrieve 'My Documents' folder once (it had two years worth of stuff in it) when my power box shorted and I thought I had lost everything. I was able to mount the drive in his machine and copy my files to a CD.

Yeah I should get really big storage drive for backups but where to find a 500 gig drive.....

I found out all the data is still on the drive, only my computer wont recognize the file system. So how would I restore the file system without writing over the data?

The drive was first formated in fat32 for my old computer (win98se), then reformated into nfts and used for storage in my new computer (win2000).

My computer was very sick, so my husband decided to fix it. He dropped it. Now it needs transplants of vital computer organs.

If you see Thalia now it's cause I braved the MALE room. That's not a place to get mail, it's the icky room that floods where I banish everything male to. It's hot and stinky and home to all the missing socks in the house - all dirty. Oh and they look at me funny (the males, not the socks) cause girls are not supposed to be here.
