Yep, and the poison isn't really that dangerous. It's just so incredibly painful that shock sets in very quickly. (And since the victim is often in water, it's easy to drown). That and lots of nasty bacteria live in and around the barb, hence evil infections set in prooty quickly. Apparently the shock, as you said, sent him into cardiac arrest.

Apparently, the type of ray that stung Irwin has a tail strike with the equivilant force of a rifleman thrusting a bayonet. Get a jagged, barbed, pointy steak-knife-on-crack barb shoved into your chest with that much force, with or without poison, and see how well you do.

I could not believe that he had died. They have footage of his death and will seek the approval to air it once they time is right. He died while doing what he loved. A good death. Though sad.

He had and air of invincibility about him. It proved that he was only human after all. I mourn his death. He was a great conservationist and will be remembered.

Very sad news.

I read in the Daily Star (not the most reliable of British papers) that the last time someone in Australia got killed by one was 1945 (or sometime long ago).

I never really expected him to die from his work, even though he was incredibly crazy with alot of what he did.

I think it was final once it pierced him, because although the poison is weak it was probably delivered right into his heart. I think he died of a heart attack and not bleeding?

That article mentions the size of the ray- 200 pounds. That thing probably packed some serious punch.

Irwin did not, contrary to popular belief, attempt to yank the barb out before he died. Given that the barb itself pierced his heart this was unlikely anyway.
