Here is what I recommend for Israel's response: "Bring it, bitches. Remember the 6 Day War?"

The logic behind Israel being formed despite having been out of Jewish hands for, well, for a LONG time, appears to be some connection between Germany and the Palestinians during WWII. I have heard that these connections are pretty sketchy. I don't know much about it, but I would point out that if it is indeed a sketchy connection, it is a hell of a "solution" to the problem of having a people without a homeland to put that set of people in their preferred homeland, and in the process disposses another set of people.

Sooner or later we are going to have to realize that people all over the world deserve to be able to live and work where they please, and in areas where there is some sort of high demand, you just have to expect that a lot of different sorts of people are going to HAVE to be forced in some way or the other to live TOGETHER, which is the thing that is always missing in Middle Eastern politics. It's a real all or nothing atmosphere over there.

Even if Israel becomes politically closer to the EU, geographically it will stay in the Middle East. The creation of Israel was meant to cause trouble from the beginning. Was it a good decision? IMHO the answer to this question does not matter anymore.
After more than 50 years, people should have accepted the fact that neither Jews nor Palestinians are going anywhere else. So, hopefully they can start working towards living together and answering more relavant questions.

I think it is in the interest of Israel to accept Palestine as a country and work towards peace. It is in the interest of everybody to improve the standard of living of Palestinians, so they are not used as political weapon by others anymore.

Salimar, the problem is much bigger than recognizing the Palestinians right for a country.

The Palestinians are suffering for many many years now from a weak leadership whose words and orders mean nothing to the people.

Qassam rockets are flying daily to Israeli cities and towns near the Gaza Strip - do you honestly think Israel can accept that? I honestly imagine that any other country in the world who would suffer daily from rocketry attacks would not be as patient as Israel as (and that is not to say I advocate any form of violence between the two nations).

Jidoe, I am aware of the difficulty of the problem. I mean that Palestinians are not going to stop throwing rockets even if Israel continues hitting back. A terrorist group, or guerrilla warfare, does not stop because one is stronger, they always find recruits. The political approach is the only solution as we have seen with the IRA and now with ETA. I am not sure of what you are suggesting instead.

I was not suggesting anything, and I agree that you can't stop terrorism/guerilla warfare by force - time has proven it.

I don't think time has proven this, exactly.

I think time has proven that limited, sensitive-minded, timid application of force cannot stop terrorism/guerilla warfare.

There are a lot of problems of this nature in the world right now that COULD be resolved if we had the will to do everything that is absolutely necessary to eradicate the problem. For good or ill, we always fall WAY short of doing what is necessary. We lack the will, the backbone, and the stomach for it.

Okay, so I'm a dork and picked up the first season of Andromeda (a.k.a. Hercules in Space). But the series does have some really spectacular quotes and the like.

Anyway, relevant to this, I *just* saw an episode right before I read this post where they were dealing with eco-terrorists who attacked ships. When Captain Hunt was asked how they were going to get the attacks to stop, he said, "The only way to effectively deal with terrorists is to find their bases of operation and destroy it or them." This coming from a guy on the series that almost always shows restraint and finds peaceful resolution.

I think I have to agree with him here. Israel has shown faaaar more restraint than we would as the US. Or nearly every country I can think of.

Suppose the hostile nations are conquered and crushed. When the oil runs out in 50 years would the territories be returned?

I have been hearing that 50 year estimate for about 20 years. That's a crock. I think it is a lie to help propogate a false scarcity.

Do I wish we'd stop using oil/gas for fuel and heat? Yes.

Do I think we have a lot more than the sellers want to admit to? Hell yes.
