She isn't in any pain. Michael Schiavo stated that, like cancer victims in their final days, can't or won't even eat.
If she were in any kind of pain, I think she would've been taken off life support a long time ago.
If I understand the case correctly, she really isn't on any kind of life support system. This isn't a case in which they turn off a machine and she quickly dies. I think why so many people are upset about this case is that she is ultimately being starved to death. What they did is removed a feeding tube from her stomach, so basically she isn't able to receive any 'food' or water at this point.Quote:

Terri's husband has stated several times that she is not starving.
I find it impossible to believe that a husband of over 15 years, who has demonstrated tremendous support and love for this woman, his wife; a man who has fought the courts, the parents, and now has even challenged the US government, would allow Terri to starve to death.
I'm really trying to understand Terri's parents' position; and I just don't get it.
Are they looking at it from a christian viewpoint that you can't kill someone, under any circumstances?
I can see how the don't want to lose their daughter, but honestly.......how much of her is left?
If they want to keep her alive for their own sake, then that's being selfish, and not a good enough reason.

Umm, just clarifying here. "A Christian viewpoint" does not mean that you can't kill anyone, ever. There's still room for capital punishment, manslaughter (which has its penalties, but it's not a horrendous crime a la murder if you accidentally and unmaliciously cause someone's death), and such.
When doctors describe her as brain damaged such that she will never regain cognitive abilities, what exactly do they mean? Never regain FULL use of all faculties? Or actually never ever be able to think? Because the article seems to preclude the latter interpretation, and the former does not, in my opinion, constitute grounds to deliberately starve her.
However, if she's not in pain, is able to communicate (note, that doesn't mean speak, she is apparently able to express emotion at least), and recognizes people, she is a living human being, probably in command of her brain. She should be able to make her own decisions.
But... this affair has apparently been going on for fifteen years. So there's arguments everywhere, on every side.
She did. She told her husband prior to her accident, or whatever put her in this vegetative state, that she never would want to live like a vegetable.Quote:

Not to be cruel or anything, but why don't you go to Terri's hospital room and ask her to give HER side? There's everyone's side to be heard but hers. The closest side to what she would have to offer is her husband's word, and he gave it already.Quote:

His pursuit of the whole "let Terri die" issue creeps me out. I have a hard time believing he is not acting selfishly on some level. He is a very different person than me, but I am not in his situation.

The only person I've discussed this issue with is my wife. Perhaps I should make an effort now to discuss it with other members of my family as well.
Getting a living will is also a good idea, though I've read that a huge percentage of the time living wills end up not applying to the exact circumstances and are thus inapplicable.
I'm not an attorney, but i'd recommend doing both a living will and medical power of attorney. Just make sure the person you choose as your power of attorney knows exactly what your wishes are.Quote:

For me, I still have my ex-wife set up as my power of attorney. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to make some changes :D
It bothers me that this situation has been going on for 15 years, and all of a sudden, the parents are seeing all sorts of responsiveness from her and all these doctors are weighing in with "she can get better..."
These doctors who are now showing up and promising miracle results are like snake-oil salesmen. Now that there is publicity to be had, they want in on the action. And even worse, they may be giving false hope to the parents. Where the hell were these people for the past 15 years?
What really makes me sick about this whole issue is that the groups that are vocally in support of maintaining this poor woman's life in a vegetative state have no problem sending young men and women over to die in Iraq. And of all the issues that Congress and the President SHOULD be dealing with... they choose to focus on this case and steroids in baseball. Give me a break.
