2005 March Madness Threshold Pool
Back by popular demand, the second annual Threshold RPG March Madness Pool is ready!

The cost to enter the pool is $25

The prizes are as follows:

1st Place: 50% of the total pool
2nd Place: 25% of the total pool
3rd Place: 15% of the total pool

Other Fun Prizes: 10% of the total pool

All prizes are in registration credit.

Before signing up, you need to make a registration payment by credit card or by online check for $25.

MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING TWO WORDS IN THE COMMENTS (for online check) OR OTHER INSTRUCTIONS (for credit card) FIELD:

This year we decided to go with the "Goofy" scoring method:
- Round 1= 1 point for every correct pick
- Round 2= 2 points for every correct pick
- Round 3= 3 points for every correct pick
- Round 4= 5 points for every correct pick
- Round 5= 8 points for every correct pick
- Round 6= 13 points for every correct pick

No kidding about Villanova. It isn't their fault though. CBS made a call to the refs that with Duke losing, they had to make sure UNC won.

That travelling call was such bullshit at the end. The lying announcer kept slowing it down and saying "see, count the steps." Every time he slowed it down it was just more obvious the guy took 2, not 3 steps.

I am up for it, but the power of the Threshold forums is not something I control. It is bigger than any one person.

And in a strange twist, Wrent actually has a shot at clawing his way out of DFL (a position he is very well acquainted with after Fantasy Football). Dee left the door wide open going into the Final Four without a single team (how humiliating!).

Ok, the total pool was $175.00. I'm going to throw an extra $25 into the pool to make it a nice round number that also makes for nice sized prizes. :) That brings the total pool to $200.00

Since we have a tie for first, those two people will split the combined 1st and 2nd place prizes.

1st Place: 50% of the total pool
2nd Place: 25% of the total pool
3rd Place: 15% of the total pool

Other Fun Prizes: 10% of the total pool

Gadiantor and Aelyn: $75 each.
Isaviel: $50.

Other???? Let's hear some suggestions for booby prizes. There is $20 up for grabs. :)

This was the first bracket pool I've ever been in, so I can't really comment on the scoring system in comparison to other systems. The points going up so much at the end really made it a competition on who could pick the two final teams (which I did by the way ;) ). Had Aelyn not hired a voodoo priestess (it's the doll thing you know) to influence the outcome of the game I'd have won by a huge margin. If the goal is to get the final team or two right the system works great, but I wonder if it would be better to reward people more for making good picks in earlier rounds...what do I know, I'm new to this.

Maybe Dee should get the Booby prize for going into the final four without a single team left? Or maybe the extra money could go to fourth place? Or maybe Wrent deserves the money for not being DFL (for a change ;) )

Actually, compared to other systems i've seen, this one DOES reward people more for doing well early - the standard mode is 32 points per round, ie: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 - which makes it REALLY hard to lose if you pick the winner.

I actually kind of like this method, because it's a good balance. It rewards people for managing to pick the winner, but also doesn't completely negate the earlier rounds. It seems to keep it closer for more of the tournament, as opposed to easy blowouts.

Cool. That is exactly why I chose this scoring system and it looks like it did indeed keep things interesting. Also, the fact that someone who DIDN'T pick the winner tied for 1st shows how important the rest of the draw was.

This was the first Thresh pool that I've participated in, and I must say. It was quite enjoyable(even though stupid fucking Duke let me down! hooray for the Forums though, keeping the killing-spree alive :) ). Congrats to Isa, Gad and Aelyn for winning. For the $20 that's left over, maybe it can all go to the guy who was in 1st place for almost the entire tournament and just could NOT win the big one? (me) ;) Or maybe just split it 4 ways($5 each) for the other people who didn't win big? Just a couple of suggestions.

Ok, since there is nobody seems to have distinguished him or herself as the deserving winner of the "special prize", I have come up with a system.

Everyone who participated in the March Madness pool, PM me with who you think our "special prize" winner should be and why you think it should be that person.

RULE #1: You cannot suggest yourself.

RULE #2: You cannot suggest the other winners: Gadiantor, Aelyn, and Isaviel.

RULE #3: Don't try to "game" the system by doing something like not voting for anyone or trying to figure out the least likely person to win so your vote for that person doesn't diminish your own chances to win the special prize!

The final winner will be selected by a combinaion of vote tallying and the quality of the reasons for that person winning.
